The Vilcanota Cordillera is an impressive string of mountains that includes the massif of Mount Ausangate (6385 m) and 3 other peaks above 6000 meters.

In the Andean cosmovision, the Ausangate is the most important sacred mountain around Cusco and the Altiplano. This is why it gives the name of Apu Ausangate (APU is the name given to the sacred in the Andes mountains).
