Other Tourist Attractions in Peru

Here we give a short list of some major attractions in Peru. Of course Peru has lots more to offer for all kinds of tourists.

Lima

A city with two sides. A lot to offer to the adventurous traveller with top-class museums, great nightlife and music scene. Also the architecture, richly historical neighbourhoods and friendly people are things that invite a lot of people. But the other side is that pollution is very high and that there is a lot of poverty, for Lima attracts a lot of people from the rural areas hoping for a better life.

Arequipa

This second largest city of Peru is nicknamed the "white city" and is surrounded by mountains, including the volcano "el Misti". Being called the white city is because many buildings are built of light-coloured volcanic rock. Accommodation and food are very cheap and there are a lot of interesting museums and of course the volcano is interesting to be visited. In the city from time to time happen earthquakes because of the volcanic activity.

Colca Canyon

The Colca Canyon is situated near Arequipa and is one of the deepest canyon in the world. Another canyon near this is the Cotahuasi Canyon which is even deeper but for some reason less known. They are twice as deep as the Grand Canyon in Arizona, US, with a depth of 3500m (11480f).

Floating islands of the Uros

Although being a bit over-touristy, these islands are still interesting to see, for they are the only in the world. The inhabitants once started living here to seek shelter from the Spanish invaders, but nowadays of course this is not necessary anymore. It is nice to learn about this lifestyle.

Nazca lines

A lot of theories about these figures which are only to be well seen from the air exist. They exist of about 800 straight lines, geometric figures and some spectacular animal and plant drawings in an area of 500 km2 (193 sq mile).
