Climate of Peru
Costa
The costa is very dry. The influence of a cold stream coming from Antarctica can be obvious at the coast between April and November. Once in a few years El Niño, a warm stream from the equator gives a wet shower.
Selva
High temperatures and a lot of rain. Average temperature in Iquitos is 32° and average rainfall of 3000 mm per year. Rainy season is from January to April and floods and landslides happen in this time of the year. During the dry season there is sometimes no rain for weeks.
Sierra
In the mountains the climate really depends on the place and height. The dry and wet season are in the same time as in the selva. The conditions can be very different because a lot of microclimates exist there. In the Cordillera Blanca the snow frontier is a bit below 5000 m but in the more southern parts of the Andes this can be at 6000 m.
