Choquequirao Trek – Choquequirao is an Inca Citadel located in the Vilcabamba Valley, in the region of Cusco, at more than 3100 meters above sea level.
Choquequirao (Quechua), means, “the golden cradle”. Choquequirao is known as the “sister sacred of Machu Picchu”. Indeed, as the very famous Citadel, Choquequirao is an Inca city perched on a mountain in the middle of a rainforest mountain. It was discovered in 1910 by Hiram Bingham, the same American archeologist who discovered Machu Picchu in 1911. Excavations and restoration of the site began in the 1990s, and it is estimated that only 30% of the site could be restored until today. Whole site have a surface of 1810 hectares.
Surrounded by the typical Inca terraces, serving agriculture and prevent the erosion of the site, the city was complied with 9 neighborhoods with temples, attics, ceremonial, platforms and places the habitations… hydraulic works.
After the occupation of Cusco by Spain in 1535, Choquequirao would have served as refuge for Inca resistance for more than 40 years.
