Treks by level of difficulty

1 – Easy

It is not necessary to have experience at this level: anyone in good health and fit enough to enjoy a good hill walk can manage these treks. The Easy Treks Usually are short in duration and at lower altitudes. However, walking in Nepal always involves an effort: trails are rarely flat and you still have to ascent and descent quite some times. Normally you walk for 4 to 5 hours during the day.

2 – Mild

These treks of medium level are tougher than the easy treks and present more of a challenge to first time trekkers. Although it is not necessary to have experience either. The moderate treks are suitable for every hiker looking for something a little more challenging and energetic. You should be in good health and reasonably fit, and you almost certainly have regular exercise at home. Most of the people who enjoy a weekend in the hills or mountains are capable of hiking a trek at this level. Some of the moderate treks are easy medium-duration walks, others are harder, shorter walks. During some of these treks you will be walking at a higher altitude and there could be an occasional longer or more difficult day; but generally the conditions of the trek will be nice.

A walking day is normally between 5 to 8 hours.

3 – Moderate

A moderate to strenuous trek requires a medium level of fitness. The trails will not always be easy and at times may be narrow and steep. At times you`ll be quite high in altitude so you should be prepared for some colder weather and occasional snow. This will also depend of the period you go on this trek. These treks are normally in well facilitated areas. Nonetheless you should be prepared for accomodations with minimal facilities and amenities. This will be like this during a camping trek. The trail runs more isolated from major roads and bigger towns.
During these treks you will walk up to 6 hours or sometimes more in one day.

4 – Challenging

For a trek at this level, fitness is very important and you may have to improve yours before starting the trek. You will be walking long hikes in mountainous terrain at significantly high altitudes; weather and remoteness can also play an important role. Previous trekking experience is not essential if you are confident of your physical condition, but it is desirable.
During a strenuous trek you walk usually between 6 to 8 hours; there may be a few longer days for crossing a pass or reaching the sleeping place.

5 – Formidable

These challenging treks are a real adventure. At this level you hike long days at high altitude. It is possible that you need some mountaineering skills that envolve rope climbing. When you are up for a trek at this level, you should prepare yourself thoroughly. You will be hiking often at altitudes that exceed 5,000 meters and you will be sleeping in tents for longer periods.

For the challenging treks mountaineering experience is advisable and an excellent physical condition is a must.
